TECH STORY

Series of educational and movement-based Kinect games for children with gross motor skill difficulties,  ADHD and dyslexia, and specifically those on the autism spectrum. Alongside the games, a web application was also developed to track the progress of the children. It is used by parents and physiatrists who work with children. The software is free to use.

MY ROLE

  • Brainstorming ideas with physiatrists
  • Game development, including custom physics and mechanics
  • Graphical design and motion graphics
  • Pose and gesture detection
  • Ccustom 2D rigging and animation of characters
  • Frontend and backend development for data analytics and visualization

BEHIND THE TECH

Unfortunately, during this project, my father suffered a stroke, which left his left side almost completely paralyzed. I modified the game for his needs so he could practice constrained sets of movements. He was quite persistent as an engineer, and played it daily. We lived in different cities, so it was also a time for us to connect over the camera, where I could encourage and cheer him on.

I also developed several small apps tailored to his specific needs, like a simplified mobile app for calls, web-based  reading app that would convert text to a scrolling line with adjustable speed, and a movement-based musical instrument (described in the “Responsive Space” project under the “Body As Instrument” section).
